Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Students Bring Home Awards
The Turkey 4th Scientific and Technical Petroleum Congress, which was organized by the TMMOB Chamber of Petroleum Engineers, was held online between November 18 – 20, 2020.
The SPE Student Paper Contest took place within the scope of the Petroleum Congress, where petroleum engineering students participate by submitting projects. The Contest includes poster presentations by students as well. Three students from our campus made us proud by winning awards at this contest. Thraiye Hemed, a METU Northern Cyprus Campus student, was honored with a first place in the category covering university students and Usama Waseem, another METU Cyprus student, was awarded second place. Ahmet Magdy, a METU Cyprus graduate, was also awarded a first place in the competition, in the “Graduate Student” category.
Organized to meet the great demand that has been observed in the sector in recent years, the Petroleum Congress provided a platform where all stakeholders in the petroleum and geothermal industry had the opportunity to exchange knowledge and experiences related to academic and technical settings and legislation. It also served as a forum where participants present and discuss the latest worldwide developments in the field.
As a major consumer of natural gas and crude oil in the region, Turkey has become a key actor in the Black Sea and Eastern Mediterranean due to the new developments that have come to the fore in recent years. In addition, Turkey is one of the most developed markets in terms of its infrastructure that is physically resilient and legally enforceable. The regulations in the energy market, the Turkish Petroleum Law and related regulations aim to increase domestic exploration and production investments, which are still limited in number, in land and sea areas. In this sense, there is a need to closely monitor the new technical and scientific developments in the oil industry and to contribute to the process.
