What is the purpose of GPC 100?
GPC 100 is a first-year student seminar designed to assist new students make a successful transition to the academic and social life of METU-NCC and thereby foster a sense of belonging to the institution. When you look at the evaluations of first-year seminar practices from the world it is seen that these types of courses specifically designed for the needs of first year students increase the academic success and play an important role in the adjustment process of first-year students.
Is GPC 100 a must course?
All undergraduate students who register with METU Northern Cyprus Campus for the first time must take GPC 100.
I am an undergraduate transfer student, do I have to take this course?
Yes, GPC 100 is a must course for all students who are in their first year at METU NCC.
Is there any exemption for this course?
There is no exemption for this course.
How can I register for GPC 100?
If you are an English Preparatory Program student you will be automatically registered. If you are a freshman student you will go through the regular registration process.
How many hours a week is the GPC 100 course?
GPC 100 is two hours per week. Also you can see the course program by clicking on the "Course Outline" link which is located at the top right-hand corner of this page.
How many credit hours are GPC 100?
GPC 100 is a (0-2) 1 credit course. The course takes place in the curriculum of the first semester of the undergraduate program. The letter grades of students who take the course when they are enrolled in English Preparatory School Programs are added to their transcripts in their first semester at the undergraduate program and taken into account in the calculations of CGPA. The letter grades of students who take the course when they are enrolled in the undergraduate program are taken into account in the calculations of both semester GPA and CGPA.
Is GPC 100 taken into account in the calculations of course load?
No.
Is there an attendance requirement for GPC 100?
Yes, attendance is required. 50 % of your letter grade will be determined by your attendance.
How is my letter grade for GPC 100 determined?
The letter grade of this course will be determined based on your attendance and active participation in small group activities.
Will taking GPC 100 bring me extra load (mid-term, quiz, projects etc.)?
GPC 100 will bring you no extra load. All activities are conducted within 2 hours dedicated to the course for each week.
Can I retake GPC 100 in order to increase my letter grade?
Students who take letter grades DD or DC can retake the course only once. Students who take letter grades above CC cannot retake the course. Students who fail the course (FD, FF, NA, W) retake GPC 100.
What can I do, if I am unsuccessful in this course?
You have to retake the course in the first semester the course is opened.
If I fail from GPC 100, does that take me to fail English Preparatory Program?
English Preparatory School and GPC 100 are completely different programs. If you fail from GPC 100 and you pass English Preparatory Program you only retake GPC 100, you do not need to repeat the English Preparatory Program.
What is the medium of instruction in the GPC 100 course?
For English Preparatory Program students, the medium of instruction for GPC 100 course is Turkish. For students who fulfill the criteria of English proficiency to start the undergraduate program in their first year at METU NCC, the medium of instruction is English.
Is time schedule for activities of GPC 100 the same for English Preparatory and undergraduate students? If yes, how is the language of instruction issue sorted out?
The course content is the same for both English Preparatory and undergraduate students but the groups are formed according to medium of instruction for the activities. So, weeks of the activities may be different for English Preparatory and undergraduate students.
Who is the instructor of GPC 100?
There is only one responsible instructor for the course. However, activities of GPC 100 is planned and/or conducted collaboratively with academic and administrative units. Also peer mentors who take GPC 310 play a key role in the execution of this course. Are peer guides who take GPC 310 responsible for grading in GPC 100?
No, peer guides are not authorized to grade GPC 100 students. The only responsible person in grading in GPC 100 is the course instructor.
Where can I direct my questions & share my difficulties related with GPC 100?
For all your questions and difficulties related with the administrative issues regarding GPC 100 you can communicate with "Student Contact and Support Office".
Can I change my group at GPC 100?
As a matter of course policy you are not allowed to change your group. However, extraordinary circumstances will be evaluated by the course instructor. You need to get into contact with "Student Contact and Support Office" if you think there is an extraordinary circumstance which keeps you away from benefitting from GPC 100.
My peer guide did not attend the week's activity because s/he is sick. Will the class be cancelled?
In such conditions your peer guide informs "Student Contact and Support Office" and the office assigns another peer guide for that week. So you follow your original program.
What if my peer guide could not attend the week's activity due to an emergency and could not inform "Student Contact and Support Office" about his/her absence?
In the first lesson, a representative for each group will be assigned on a voluntary basis. This group representative gets in touch with the office in such cases and the office takes care of the situation.
I am living out of campus (e.g., Nicosia, Kyrenia) and I do not have a ride home after the GPC 100 class. What can I do?
Please get into contact with "Student Contact and Support Office" and provide the office with your transportation details so that the office can make the necessary arrangements for the bus transportation.
