GUIDELINES FOR BOOK AND ARTICLE AWARDS OFFERED BY
MIDDLE EAST TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY NORTHERN CYPRUS CAMPUS
1. ARTICLE AWARD
- Articles nominated for the award must have been published in full text in peer-reviewed scholarly journals classified in the Web of Science (WoS) database in the Q1 or Q2 category.
- The Journal Citation List, developed by taking into account the latest classification released by WoS as of the date of application for the award and issued by METU Northern Cyprus Campus Rectorate, is used as a basis in the classification of journals.
- Authors of publications who have the following qualifications on the date of application may apply for the award:
- Full-time faculty members of METU Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC),
- Full-time administrative staff working in various positions at METU NCC,
- Students enrolled in METU NCC undergraduate or graduate programs,
- Faculty members retired from METU NCC and are not currently employed by another institution as regular staff members.
- The institutional affiliation of the applicant must be indicated in compliance with the “Guidelines for Referring to the University in Scholarly Publications” determined by the METU Senate. METU should appear as the institutional affiliation of the applicant and the Northern Cyprus Campus should be specified.
- The article nominated for the award must have been published in the year of application or the preceding year and must contain the publication details (DOI and volume number, year of publication) in their final version.
- Applications are submitted to the Office of the Campus President. After receiving the applications, determines the nature or value of the prize is determined by the Office of the Campus President. Full-time faculty members of METU NCC need to submit their applications through the Campus Information System of METU NCC.
- The amount of cash award to be presented to different categories of authors defined in Article 3 for their publications within the scope of Article 1 is determined by the Campus Administrative Board.
- The amount of cash award to be presented to authors in recognition of their publications submitted after 1 May 2022, is 5,000 TL for articles in the WoS Q1 journal list and 2,500 TL for articles in the WoS Q2 journal list.
- If the publications are co-authored internationally (all affiliated with universities located abroad), the award amount is multiplied by the coefficient of 1.25.
- The cash award presented to multiple-author publications will be distributed equally among all authors affiliated with METU.
- This award does not apply to publications with more than 10 authors.
- In order to apply for the article award, the relevant publication record must be added to the researcher’s ORCID record and must be publicly visible on his/her ORCID publication list.

2. BOOK AWARD
- Copyrighted books published by internationally recognized publishing houses that are included in Type A* and Type B** publisher lists specified by the “METU Directive for Academic Positions and Titles and Appointment and Promotion Procedures” are eligible for the book award.
- Books published in languages that are recognized as the universal language of science (i.e. English, French, German) are eligible for the award.
- All submitted books must have been published within the year of application or in the preceding year.
- Authors of publications who have the following qualifications on the date of application may apply for the award:
- Full-time faculty members of METU Northern Cyprus Campus (METU NCC),
- Full-time administrative staff working in various positions at METU NCC,
- Students enrolled in METU NCC undergraduate or graduate programs,
- Faculty members retired from METU NCC and are not currently employed by another institution as regular staff members.
- The institutional affiliation of the applicant must be indicated in compliance with the “Guidelines for Referring to the University in Scholarly Publications” determined by the METU Senate. METU should appear as the institutional affiliation of the applicant and the Northern Cyprus Campus should be specified.
- Thesis works conducted at the METU Northern Cyprus Campus by students who are enrolled in the graduate programs offered at the Campus can be submitted for consideration for the award, provided that they are converted into a published book and that this is explicitly specified in the book, even if they are employed at another institution on the date of application.
- The book must have been nominated for the award by the METU Administrative Board.
- The upper award limit is 7,500 TL for single-author scholarly books, professional books and textbooks of Type A and 5,000 TL for scholarly books, professional books and textbooks of Type B. If a multiple-author book wins the award, the total amount of cash award will be distributed equally among the authors.
- In cases when the academic staff member applying for the award is also the editor of the book submitted for the award, s/he will receive 30% of the cash award that the author of a book in the same category is entitled for. If a book with multiple editors wins the award, the total amount of cash award will be distributed equally among the editors.
- To calculate the amount of the cash award for a book chapter, the ratio of the number of pages in the chapter to the total number of pages of the book is taken into consideration. Based on this calculation, the lower award limit is 180 TL for publications of Type A and 120 TL for publications of Type B. In cases when a multiple-author book chapter wins the award, the total amount of the cash award is distributed equally among the authors.
- If the author of the book chapter is also the editor of the book submitted for the award, the cash award amounts specified in Article 9 and Article 10 are calculated separately and the author receives the total amount. However, if this total amount exceeds the upper award limit allocated to the books that fall into the same category, the author receives the upper cash award amount awarded for books.
- Authors of graduate theses that have been converted into published books in accordance with the aforementioned conditions will receive one-half of the upper limit of the amount of cash prize awarded for books in the same category.
