DIRECTIVE FOR UNDERGRADUATE ENGINEERING PATHWAY PROGRAM

PART I
Aim
ARTICLE 1 – (1) The aim of this Directive is to regulate the procedures and principles for students admitted to the Engineering Pathway Program after applying to the engineering degree programs offered at Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus and the conduct of education, examinations and assessment at the Engineering Pathway Program.

Scope
ARTICLE 2 – (1) This Directive comprises the provisions concerning student admissions and registration to the undergraduate Engineering Pathway Program offered at Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus and the conduct of education, examinations and assessment at the Engineering Pathway Program.

Basis
ARTICLE 3 – (1) This Directive has been drawn up based on the provisions of the Middle East Technical University Undergraduate Education Regulation.

Definitions
ARTICLE 4 – (1) Wherever the following terms appear in this Directive, they shall have the meaning set forth below:
a) The Rector: Rector of Middle East Technical University
b) The Senate: Middle East Technical University Senate
c) DBE: Middle East Technical University School of Foreign Languages Department of Basic English
d) The University / METU: Middle East Technical University
e) The University Administrative Board: Middle East Technical University Administrative Board
f) SFL: Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus School of Foreign Languages
g) Directive: Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus Undergraduate Engineering Pathway Program Directive
h) The Engineering Pathway Program: Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus Undergraduate Engineering Pathway Program
i) ABENS: Middle East Technical University Northern Cyprus Campus Academic Board of Engineering and Natural Sciences

PART II
Engineering Pathway Program
ARTICLE 5 – (1) The Engineering Pathway Program aims to improve the basic knowledge of mathematics and natural sciences of prospective students who are not citizens of the Republic of Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. The minimum period of study for this program is 16 weeks including the final examination periods.
(2) The courses to be offered in the Engineering Pathway Program are determined by the Campus Administrative Board upon the recommendation of the Academic Board of the Engineering and Natural Sciences.

Medium of Instruction
ARTICLE 6 – (1) The medium of instruction in the Engineering Pathway Program is English.
(2) Students are registered to the Program after their proficiency in English is documented.
(3) The assessment of the English proficiency of the students admitted to and enrolled in the Program is made in accordance with the provisions of the “Middle East Technical University School of Foreign Languages Rules and Regulations Governing the Department of Basic English Preparatory Class”.

Period of Study
ARTICLE 7 – (1) The period of study is one semester for the Engineering Pathway Program.
(2) The period of study which is spent at the Engineering Pathway Program is not included in the periods of study specified in Article 44 of the Law No. 2547 for the undergraduate program to which the student is admitted.

Admission to the Engineering Pathway Program
ARTICLE 8 – (1) The principles governing the application, admission and registration of students to the Engineering Pathway Program are determined by the Senate.
(2) The registration of the students admitted to the Program is carried out on the dates stated in the academic calendar as announced at the official website of the University.
(3) Those who fail to fulfil the registration requirements announced by the University are dismissed from the Program.

Attendance
ARTICLE 9 – (1) Attendance is compulsory in the Engineering Pathway Program.
(2) Students are required to attend courses at a rate specified by the Academic Board of Engineering and Natural Sciences. Students must have a minimum attendance rate of 80%.
(3) Failure to meet the minimum attendance requirement announced by the University results in termination of student status.

Success and assessment
ARTICLE 10 – (1) Students receive a letter grade for each course at the end of the semester they are registered in. The letter grades are determined in accordance with the provisions of the METU Undergraduate Education Regulation. Students are not permitted to withdraw from a course in the Engineering Pathway Program.
(2) Students whose semester Grade Point Averages (GPA) are at least 2,00 and who have not earned FF, FD, NA or U grades in the semester concerned are considered successful in the Engineering Pathway Program and are enrolled in the undergraduate  programs.

Repeating Courses
ARTICLE 11 – (1) The courses in which the letter grades FF, FD, NA or U have been earned must be repeated. Students who have earned any of the letter grades mentioned are given one additional semester. At the end of the second semester, students whose Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) are below 2,00 and those who have earned the letter grade FF, FD, NA or U are dismissed from the University.

PART III
Advisory
ARTICLE 12 – (1) The Academic Board of Engineering and Natural Sciences assigns academic advisors for the Engineering Pathway Program from among full time academics.
(2) The duties and responsibilities of the academic advisors are as follows:
a) They give approval to the students for online registration through face-to-face interaction with students.
b) They inform the students about the courses they will take each semester and the rules and requirements of the Program.
c) They keep track of the students’ performance throughout the semester, make the evaluations required and meet the students when necessary.

Leave of Absence
ARTICLE 13 – (1) Students enrolled in the Engineering Pathway Program are not granted leave of absence to take a break from their studies.

Contribution Fee, Tuition Fee and Other Fees
ARTICLE 14 – (1) The contribution fees, tuition fees and other fees are determined by the University Administrative Board.

Disenrollment
ARTICLE 15 – (1) Students may disenroll from the University by applying to the Registrar’s Office.

Certificate and Documents
ARTICLE 16 – (1) The Registrar’s Office prepares a transcript, which is a detailed record of student’s marks or grades.

Issues Not Covered
ARTICLE 17 – (1) The issues that are not covered by this Directive are dealt with in accordance with the METU Undergraduate Education Regulation, METU School of Foreign Languages Rules and Regulations Governing the Department of Basic English, and other relevant legislation.

Validity
ARTICLE 18 – (1) This Directive shall take effect from the beginning of the Academic Year 2018-2019.

Execution
ARTICLE 19 – (1) The provisions of this Directive are executed by the Rector of the Middle East Technical University.
