Who Is Entitled to Take the Exam?

1. Newly admitted undergraduate METU NCC students. 
2. Students currently studying at the School of Foreign Languages who have earned the right to take this exam. 
3. Students who have failed at the School of Foreign Languages but are entitled to take this exam.1. Newly admitted undergraduate METU NCC students. 
4. Graduate applicants (3rd and 4th year METU NCC students and students outside METU NCC).

NB: Please see "Date and Place" for detailed information about each exam and to see who is eligible to take the exam.

 

Date and Place

The next examinations will be held on:

1) September 10, 2024 in one FACE-TO FACE session.

* Students who are newly placed to undergraduate programs through YKS (Turkish Higher Education Institutions Exam)
* Students currently studying at the English Preparatory Program who have the right to take the exam with regard to related regulation.
* Students who have failed at the School of Foreign Languages but are entitled to take this exam.

 Exam Time: 10:00.

September 10, 2024 EPE will be held simultaneously at both METU Ankara and METU North Cyprus Campuses.

New students (enrolled in 2024) should specify their exam place as METU Ankara or METU NCC during their YKS registration.

Students who are already on the English Preparatory Program (enrolled in 2023) have received an email with a link to the form ‘September 10 EPE Campus Preference Form’ (METU Ankara or METU NCC).

Students who are dismissed due to absenteeism, those who have completed their maximum academic semesters but have been dismissed due to academic failure and have the right to take September EPE, or students who have not received the email regarding September 2024 EPE Campus Preference Form need to contact the Registrar’s Office in the first week of September.

 

2) September 17, 2024 in one FACE-TO-FACE session.

3) October 2, 2024 in one FACE-TO-FACE session
Who is entitled to take this exam?
* Newly admitted undergraduate students who registered late with a valid excuse.
N.B: Students who will take the exam must read the EPE Exam Guide carefully.
Exam Time: 10:00

4) December 10, 2024 in one FACE-TO-FACE session
Who is entitled to take this exam?
* Graduate program applicants who are METU students and students outside METU
* Students who are within the scope of Article 35
Exam Time: 09:00

Registration

Newly registered students can apply for the exam during registration. Students who are currently studying at the English Preparatory Program have to register for the EPE given at the beginning of September.

Students who have failed due to academic failure or absenteeism, although are still entitled to take a proficiency exam, and METU or non-METU students who want to take the EPE to apply for graduate programs have to register for each exam they wish to take.

 

Rules 
I) FOR FACE TO FACE EXAMS: 
1. Test takers are required to have with them an official ID issued by METU (or a comparable document) , a soft pencil, a ball point pen and an eraser. 
2. Test takers are not permitted to have with them or use during breaks: bags of any kind (handbags, backpacks, carrier bags, etc.) electronic devices (including but not limited to beepers, pagers, radios, telephones or cellular (mobile) phones, translators, stopwatches, watch alarms, personal data assistants (PDAs), and any other electronic or photographic devices of any kind testing aids (including but not limited to books, pamphlets, notes, dictionaries, thesauri or potential aids of any kind.) In the event of a reported violation of any of the rules above, the test taker's test score will be cancelled. 
3. Test takers have to be in the exam hall 30 minutes before the exam starts. 
4. As the exam starts with the Listening component first, nobody will be admitted to the exam after the session starts. Latecomers will be admitted to their exam halls when the listening section is completed and doors are opened. 
5. Test takers must fully comply with the proctors' directions during the exam. 
6. Disciplinary/legal action will be taken against those who attempt to impersonate the rightful test takers or who attempt to cheat, and the exam results of such candidates will be considered invalid.

 

 

Results 

The exam results will be announced at  https://student.metu.edu.tr/ web page.

  • There is  no make-up for METU NCC-EPE.

 

 

Passing Grade and Equivalence with Other Examinations

The passing grade for undergraduate students (TEFL and SUNY students, see equivalence table below) is 60. The grades are rounded off to the nearest whole number.

  • METU EPE: METU English Proficiency Exam
  • TOEFL IBT: Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-based 
  • IELTS: International English Language Testing System - Academic Version (Average of four components)
  • PTE ACADEMIC: Pearson Test of English, Academic Version

              1. The results of these exams are valid for two years. 
              2. TOEFL PBT and TWE are no longer administered. The submitted valid scores are to be evaluated by The School of Foreign Languages. 
              3. The minimum English proficiency requirements may be raised by the concerned Graduate Program for graduate student admissions. Please check the announcements made by the graduate program. 
              4. TOEFL-IBT Special Home Edition exam which is taken on or before 14 April 2022 (not more than 2 years have passed over the exam date) can be used. Announced according to the University Senate Decision, dated April 26, 2022, decision no. 2.  
              5. The IELTS Academic Exam taken after 23 December 2022 is not valid. However, the IELTS ACADEMIC Exam taken on or before 23 December 2022 can be used (provided that no more than 2 years have passed since the exam date) 
              6. With the University Senate Decision No. 7 dated October 26, 2023 2023/8, there will be no (credit) exemption from the compulsory "ENG 101 English for Academic Purposes" course for undergraduate programs as of the Spring semester of the 2023-2024 Academic Year.
