This document is a supplement to Decision No 2015/3-5 dated March 31, 2015, issued by the METU Senate.

METU NORTHERN CYPRUS CAMPUS
DIRECTIVE FOR GRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIPS

ARTICLE 1- AIM

This Directive describes the principles concerning research scholarships which aim to support research activities conducted by the METU Northern Cyprus Campus faculty and which are available to students currently registered at METU on a graduate degree program.

ARTICLE 2- DEFINITIONS

Campus: METU Northern Cyprus Campus

Graduate Research Scholarship (GRS): The scholarship and research grant awarded within the framework of this Directive.

Scholarship-holder: The student who is currently enrolled in a graduate degree at METU and is awarded a GRS.

ARTICLE 3- SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

  1. The GRS is available to students who are enrolled in a graduate degree at METU and who are involved in the projects conducted within the scope of the METU NCC Directive for Scientific Research Projects (SRP).
  2. If the scholarship-holder is enrolled in a graduate degree at the Northern Cyprus Campus of METU, it is required that the SRP manager should also act as the thesis supervisor of the scholarship-holder.
  3. In cases where the scholarship-holder is enrolled in a graduate degree at one of the other METU campuses, the SRP should be in the “Inter-campus” category and the actual thesis supervisor or co-supervisor, who is affiliated with the other METU campus involved, should be the project manager.
  4. The GRS is not available to applicants who hold a full-time salaried position.

ARTICLE 4- SCOPE AND DURATION (Amendment: CEB 21.01.2019/2)

The GRS covers the following:

  1.  Tuition fees (if applicable)

For the fiscal year 2017;

  1. The GRS provides 1140 TL for master’s candidates and 1560 TL for doctoral candidates per month. Holders of any other scholarship offered by any other institution, and those holding a part-time salaried position, whose monthly income is below the amounts mentioned above, will be given the difference.
  2. A research grant worth of 720 TL per academic semester, excluding the summer period. The research grant aims to support the research and educational activities of the scholarship-holders. The recipients may use their grant for their own preferred items, approved by their supervisors, including travel expenses, books or consumables. If the fund is not used within the relevant semester, it may be transferred to future semesters.

For future fiscal years, the amount of scholarship and research grant is determined by the Campus Executive Board upon the recommendation of the Chairperson of the Board.

The scholarship-holder contributes to research within the project at the campus where s/he is registered. Within a calendar year, the scholarship-holder is entitled to 15 days paid leave for rest or for personal reasons, and, in addition, an unpaid leave for personal reasons, upon the approval of the project manager. If necessitated by the research, the scholarship-holder may spend some time off-campus at various institutions and organizations, upon the recommendation of the project manager. When granting a leave of absence with or without pay, the supervisor approval is necessary in addition to the project manager’s approval, in the cases where the SRP manager is also the thesis co-supervisor of the scholarship-holder.

ARTICLE 5- OBLIGATIONS OF SCHOLARSHIP-HOLDERS

The scholarship-holder is required to complete assigned SRP activities, as required by the project schedule and fulfil the requirements of the graduate program in which s/he is registered.

ARTICLE 6- CONTINUITY CONDITIONS

  1. A three month extension may be granted to the scholarship-holder whose graduate student status at METU ends due to any reason, upon the recommendation of the project manager, the agreement of the Scientific Research Committee and the approval of the Chairperson of the Campus Executive Board,
  2. Any scholarship-holder, whose failure or inefficiency to fulfil the tasks assigned by the project manager is officially reported, loses the grant with the agreement of the Scientific Research Committee and the approval of the Chairperson of the Campus Executive Board.
  3. The scholarship-holder, upon whom a reprimand or a more serious penalty is imposed, in line with the METU NCC Directive for Student Disciplinary Matters, loses the grant as of the date the penalty is issued.

This seven-article Directive shall come into force as of the date it is approved by the Senate of Middle East Technical University, and is executed by the Chairperson of the Campus Executive Board.
