ENGL 101 Development of Reading and Writing Skills I (4-0)4
The course reinforces academic reading skills (finding the main idea, skimming, scanning, inferring information, guessing vocabulary from context, etc.) through reading selections on a variety of topics. It also aims at developing critical thinking, which enables students to respond to ideas in a well-organized written format. Other reading-related writing skills such as paraphrasing and summarizing are also dealt with.

ENGL 102 Development of Reading and Writing Skills II (4-0)4
The course reinforces academic writing skills. In this course, students write different types of essays based on the ideas they are exposed to in the reading selections. The emphasis is on the writing process in which students go through many stages from brainstorming and outlining to producing a complete documented piece of writing.

ENGL 211 Academic Oral Presentation Skills (3-0)3
The course aims at developing oral presentation skills. To this end, students are engaged in classroom discussions following advanced reading texts on a variety of topics. In the course students study effective presentation techniques, do extensive reading and carry out research to give presentations of different functions with mature content and topical vocabulary.
Prerequisite: ENGL 101 and 102.

ENGL 311 Advanced Communication Skills (3-0)3
This is a course designed to develop communication skills in a business context. The course is divided into two parts, namely job-seeking skills (CV and application letter writing, interview skills, etc.) and on-the-job skills. Emphasis is given to the accuracy, fluency, and effectiveness of students in certain business tasks such as socializing, telephoning, presenting information, holding meetings, etc.
Prerequisite: ENGL 101, 102, and 211.

ENGL 213 Creative Nonfiction (3-0)3
In this class, students will explore the theory and practice of creative nonfiction by reading and writing in a variety of forms, including list essays, memoirs, travel writing, and personal essay. Students will also learn the core elements of nonfiction such as voice, character, point of view, and scene.

ENGL 219 English through Seminars in Film (3-0)3

This is a course for students who like watching and discussing movies.  The course encompasses all four skills of language, class hours mainly focusing on speaking and listening skills, homework assignments focusing on listening, reading and writing skills. It aims to facilitate oral communication with the academic discussion method of seminar, which is a scholarly discussion technique that will be taught by the instructor at the beginning of the semester. Each week, students watch a different movie and think about a set of open-ended questions assigned by the instructor as homework. In the class, students discuss the questions using the seminar method. The seminars will focus on the story in the movies. 

ENGL 312 Conversational English (3-0)3
English312 is a learner-centered and integrated-skill-based course and is designed to help non-native speakers of the English language improve intelligibility and communicability and help them gain self-confidence and self-monitoring abilities in English. Tasks including various functions and situations of speaking will be integrated with up-to-date and authentic materials to enable students to express themselves spontaneously, fluently, and in the appropriate manner in English.. The course will also offer a supportive learning environment to help students gain an understanding of the phonological and morphological impacts of Latin and Greek on the English language.

ENGL 411 English In The Media (3-0)3
Intermediate-advanced work on English as it is used in the international media by native writers/ speakers, in a variety of different registers such as newscasts (CNN and BBC), video documentaries, popular sitcoms, and authentic unabridged texts. Emphasis will be on language and on critical thinking. Students will have some autonomy and flexibility in their choice of learning strategies, themes, and registers, and in turn, they will make an ongoing, active contribution to the course.

GRM 201 Basic German I (4-0)4
An introduction to the basic structures of spoken and written German.

GRM 202 Basic German II (4-0)4
A continuation of GRM 202.
Prerequisite: GRM 201 or proficiency at GRM 201 level

GRM 203 Intermediate German I (4-0)4
Intermediate German for Science and the Social Sciences.
Prerequisite: GRM 202 or proficiency at GRM 202 level

GRM 204 Intermediate German II (4-0)4 
A continuation of GRM 203.
Prerequisite: GRM 203 or proficiency at GRM 203 level

FRENCH

FRN 201 Beginning French I (4-0)4
An introduction to basic spoken and written French.

FRN 202 Beginning French II (4-0)4
A continuation of FRN 201.
Prerequisite: FRN 201 or consent of the instructor

FRN 203 Intermediate French I (4-0)4 
Further reinforcement of basic French.
Prerequisite: FRN 202 or proficiency at FRN 202 level

FRN 204 Intermediate French II (4-0)4
The final stage in the development of knowledge of basic French.
Prerequisite: FRN 203 or proficiency at FRN 203 level

SPANISH

SPN 201 Basic Spanish I (4-0)4
An introduction to basic spoken and written Spanish.

SPN 202 Basic Spanish II (4-0)4
A continuation of SPN 201.
Prerequisite: SPN 201 or proficiency at SPN 201 level

SPN 203 Intermediate Spanish I (4-0)4
Further reinforcement of basic Spanish.
Prerequisite: SPN 202 or proficiency at SPN 202 level

SPN 204 Intermediate Spanish II (4-0)4
A continuation of SPN 203.
Prerequisite: SPN 203 or proficiency at SPN 203 level

CHINESE

CHN 201 (4-0)4

It is an introductory course to standard mandarin designed for students who have not studied Chinese previously. Students are going to learn the pinyin-Chinese phonetics system, basic vocabulary, and simple grammatical structure. All four skills of language learning (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) will be covered in this course. Students practice listening and speaking in real-life situations, learn to read and write characters, and examine how culture and language interact in China. 

CHN 202 (4-0)4

It is an introductory course to standard mandarin designed for students who have studied Chinese HSK1 previously or have an interest in learning Chinese and can communicate in simple basic Chinese. Students are supposed to have learned 30-34 hours and mastered about 150 Chinese words previously. The students will experience warm-up, text, notes, practice, phonetics, character, application, and culture during the teaching procedure. All four skills of language learning (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) will be covered in this course. Students practice listening and speaking in real-life situations, learn to read and write characters, and examine how culture and language interact in China. 

Prerequisite: CHN 201

Compulsory Turkish Courses

TUR 101: Turkish I (0 credit, 2 teaching hours)

Compulsory course for native Turkish speaker students of engineering and social sciences programs. The course offers a scientific and up-to-date introduction to language and relevant concepts. Students are encouraged to discuss and discover the effects of language on culture, society, communication, relationships, and media. 

TUR 102: Turkish II (0 credit, 2 teaching hours)

The continuation of TUR 101. The course focuses on practical uses of Turkish in professional life (public speaking, presentations, job interviews, and social media). 

TUR 103: Turkish I: Written Expression (2 credits)

Compulsory course for native Turkish speaker students of EFL and GPC programs. TUR 103 focuses on students’ writing skills and introduces text linguistics. Students are assigned writing tasks of various genres throughout the semester. 

TUR 104: Turkish II: Oral Communication (2 credits)

The continuation of TUR 103. TUR 104 aims to develop students' oral communication skills. The course mainly covers public speaking, presentations, and job interviews. Students are assigned to prepare and deliver a public presentation.

TUR 201: Elementary Turkish (0 credit, 4 teaching hours)

Compulsory Turkish as a second language course for all international students.

TUR 202: Intermediate Turkish (0 credit, 4 teaching hours)

The continuation of TUR 201. 

Elective Turkish Courses

TUR 315: Critical Reading (3 credits)

The course aims to develop students’ analyzing, interpreting, criticizing, and evaluating skills for oral, written, and visual texts.

TUR 320: Literature and Cinema (3 credits)

The course focuses on the relationship between literature and cinema. Students are encouraged to discover the similarities and differences between literature and cinema by evaluating selected masterpieces.
