Welcome To METU NCC Guidance and Psychological Counseling Program
The Guidance and Psychological Counseling Program at METU NCC admitted its first students in 2011. The program is designed to train psychological counselors who are competent practitioners with high levels of social, ethical and professional sensitivities. The students of the program are expected to gain critical thinking skills related to theory and practice and to be responsive to the diverse cultural background, worldviews, values, and realities of their clients. The program aims to equip students with necessary theoretical knowledge and skills to serve as counselors in addressing the academic, career and personal/social needs of individuals.
Students enrolled in this program take compulsory courses in diverse areas of psychology including developmental psychology, physiological psychology, social psychology, and psychopathology. They are also trained theory and skill wise in areas as school guidance and counseling, mental health counseling, career counseling, and group counseling leadership. Elective courses are offered in various areas compatible with the expertise of the faculty members. The students are also required to complete practicum which demands the application of their knowledge and skills in universities, research centers, mental health centers, schools, or other related institutions. Students are continuously provided with supervision from the course instructors during their training. The program is also in close contact with the Student Development and Counseling Center at METU NCC where a range of guidance and counseling activities are carried out. The center provides students with an excellent practicum opportunity.
In multi-purpose laboratory, the students are able to put their theoretical knowledge into practice. The laboratory is specifically used in courses like Field Practice in Individual Counseling, Measurement and Evaluation in Counseling, Practicum in Group Counseling, and Practicum in Career Counseling. During practice sessions in the laboratory, students are observed by their instructors through the use of a two-way mirrored room system, and get immediate or post-practice feedback when necessary. Being a significant constituent of psychological counseling education, supervision is possible thanks to this laboratory and its equipment. Students can record their practice sessions using the advanced video-audio system within the rooms, and then both students and their supervisors can watch these recordings. Our laboratory provides a suitable environment for some other activities such as applying psychological tests, conducting research, having small group classes, and doing psychodrama.
Graduates of Guidance and Psychological Counseling program are qualified to work as guidance counselor/psychological counselor at public and private schools, university counseling centers, and their educational settings; and human resources development departments of public and private institutions.
