Middle East Technical University (METU) is Turkey 's most prominent university with an expressly international mission and profile. METU's Ankara Campus was established in 1956 with a mission to serve not only Turkey but also the Middle Eastern-Eurasian region. As a research university of international reputation, METU offers an intellectually stimulating and culturally diverse environment that fosters rigorous academic learning and cutting-edge research and development.
Currently, METU offers 40 undergraduate (Bachelors Degree) programs in 5 faculties, as well as 96 Masters and 62 Ph.D. programs in 5 graduate schools on its modern Ankara Campus. More than 777 full-time faculty members and 1,300 research/teaching assistants serve a total of 23,000 students from all parts of the world. As an international university with English as the medium of instruction, METU has already graduated more than 3,300 international students from its undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. programs. Today, METU has more than 1,000 international students and 40 full-time foreign faculty members from 15 countries.

High Standards of International Education
METU is one of Turkey's most competitive universities. Each year, among the students taking the National University Entrance Examination, over 1/3 of the 1000 applicants with the highest scores attend METU. Due to the high demand towards METU is so great, most of our departments accept only the top 1% of the approximately 1.5 million applicants taking the National University Entrance Examination. Over 40% of METU's students go on to graduate school.
Between 1994 and 2004, all undergraduate programs of the Engineering Faculty went through formal reviews by the international "Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET)" and were assessed to be equivalent to the most renowned programs of their kind in the USA .
In terms of the number of publications in international journals, METU faculty members rank highly among those of the top state universities in Turkey , and the University generates the largest volume of funds from national and international research projects. Also, METU has the largest volume in contract research sponsored by public and private organizations on a nationwide scale. Equipped with a successful small-industry incubator (TekMer) and one of world's fastest growing science parks (METU-Technopolis), METU has been at the forefront of university-industry collaboration. Today METU hosts around 140 high-tech companies which carry a portfolio of over 350 national and international R&D projects.
METU's international standing is also reflected in its extensive and strong ties with reputable universities in the United States , Europe , and other parts of the world. Today, the University has bilateral agreements with 125 universities and research institutions worldwide, and has active student and faculty exchange programs and/or joint-degree programs with institutions including the University of California and State University of New York in the USA , Darmstadt and Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Mécanique & Aérotechnique (ENSMA) in Europe, and Monash University in Australia .
METU, with 168 Erasmus agreements and 182 bilateral exchange and cooperation agreements with universities in third countries (i.e., in Central Asia, Middle East, North America, Australia, Far East and Pacific Region), annually sends 350 students and 60 teaching staff and hosts 300 students and 50 teaching staff/researchers. METU is a member of many associations and networks dealing with international education and exchange such as EUA, EAIE, IIE, GE3, CEASAR, SEFI, CIEE. METU actively participates in AIESEC and IAESTE summer internship programs. |
